01 / Fisherman's Wharf Ecological Market

Sustainable design inspired by the bay

Site Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California

Course ARH 619 / Advanced Design Studio III Integrated Design Concepts

Instructor Eric Reeder

The project featured a living roof with sustainable plants and gardens, creating an architectural landform that was more energy efficient than traditional roofs. This sloping roof provided a visual connection between the city and the natural maritime context, reflecting the surrounding landscape.

The building maximized the use of natural daylight with an ultra-clear structural glass skin, offering stunning views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge while incorporating natural ventilation through dampers in windows and doors. Additionally, the project included an on-site water treatment facility to clean and recycle wastewater, as well as seawater cooling and heating systems to promote environmental sustainability.
